My Paw-Paw's cabin is buried so far in the untamed murkiness of the bayou that ain't nobody gonna find it without the help of a Benoit boy, and seeing as I'm the last Benoit boy dere is, this is the safest place in the world that I know of.
Embry walks with her arms crossed over her breasts, head tilted slightly down so that her hair hangs forward and covers her face. When I do steal brief glances at her expression, it's steely and closed-off and I got no idea what to make of it.
“You mad at me?” I ask as we walk, dripping from our second swim of the night, along the edge of the island where the cabin sits. This land is owned in trust, under some ol' company name my Paw-Paw made up to avoid the tax man, so I don't see Roch or anybody else finding it.
“I'm not mad,” she answers, speaking for the first time since we fucked. Hell, I didn't mean for our first time together to be like that, all messy and weird, ruttin' in da dirt like gators. Raking my fingers through my hair, I watch Embry carefully, trying to read her body language. Seems damn near impossible right now.
“The sex was no good?” I ask with a cocked brow and a sideways half-smile.
Embry looks over like I'm a stupid motherfucker me, some real stupid git.
“It's not …” she starts, but then glances away sharply, fingers curling into tight fists, locks of wet hair hanging down the sides of her face and against her shoulders and neck. “We both know you know what you're doing, Phoenix.”
Throwing my head back, I can't help a laugh. Things might be shit right now, but Embry … Embry makes everything seem … like it ain't so bad after all. I do anything for dis girl, walk on water, wrestle a gator, defy a dangerous underground fighting circuit.
“Must've had a lot of practice,” she mumbles and I pause, dropping my head back down to look at her, head tilted slightly to one side as I study that beautiful face o' hers. Even without all the bruising, dere's nothing in the world like Embry LeBlanc. Nothing at all.
A man's heart could gather da strength to beat just from lookin' at her.
“You know how much practice I had,” I say, because she was the one that encouraged me to start dating, and then got pissed every time I came back with a story of some girl or another. I wonder if she was jealous? But nah, nah. I'm thinking too highly of myself, no? “And I got a lot more while you been gone.”
“I don't want to talk about that shit,” Embry snaps and I cock an eyebrow, pausing underneath a heavy cypress and giving her a look. “What?” she asks, pausing a few feet ahead of me and glancing back.
“Am I crazy couyon or you jealous, Bab— Embry?”
“I'm not jealous, and can we please keep going? I need a shower, Phoenix.
